“A Future Without Oppression”

Every year as part of Emancipation Month, on the joyous streets of Kensington Market. Black women and non-binary artists take over the day with color, expression and intent to conjure their version of ‘A Future Without Oppression’.

This process is a recurring practice of imagining majestic futures, both for Black Women and for Kensington Market. Learning from the past, and illustrating beautiful possibilities. Showcasing the talent of Black women artists within the city whilst bringing attention to issues they face as a community.

Black Women Paint began in 2020. A hopeful response to the disproportionate impact of COVID-19. Especially on Black communities and women. It followed the deaths of George Floyd and Regis Korchinski-Paquet. A lingering artistic impression on Baldwin street to help Black neighbours feel safe in their streets again.
